What has not been done so far even from big projects, or from the state institutions, is realized from NGO JONA – Sarandë, under the support of PPNEA, within the CEPF founded project “Land of Eagles and Castles”. Local NGO JONA, in close collaboration with teachers and pupils of “9 Tetori” school in Saranda have started a pilot project for recycling of plastic, and so far have yielded excellent results. At a first stage experts of JONA NGO and teachers from the area carried out a wide awareness raising campaign on the impacts of plastic in environment and after that started the pilot activities for recycling of plastic. At first, these activities are getting implemented in one school of the region, to be further expanded in all the schools. Now in the “9 Tetori” school it is created the “Recycling Day”, when all pupils bring the plastic generated by their household. The plastic is gathered at a appointed site and collected immediately after that by a local recycling company, which pays for the amount of plastic. With the revenues received, the pupils carry out little but necessary investments for their school and finance study trips for themselves. Let’s hope that the relevant stakeholders and institutions will be motivated from such excellent work of environmentalists of Saranda, and further support them. This initiative, even being small at current, is implementing the same principles where are based the modern recycling systems in developing countries.
