Land of Eagles and Castles: Integrated Participatory Management for Albanian Coastal Biodiversity
The center for the Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA), in partnership with the Bulgarian BirdLife partner, Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) started the implementation of the second phase of the “Land of Eagles and Castles” project with the full title “Land of Eagles and Castles: Integrated Participatory Management for Albanian Coastal Biodiversity”.
This project likewise the first phase is financed by the by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF). The CEPF is a joint initiative of l’Agence Française de Développement, Conservation International, the European Union, the Global Environment Facility, the Government of Japan, the MacArthur Foundation and the World Bank.
Our project, is in line with the CEPF Strategic Direction 1: Support civil society to engage stakeholders in demonstrating integrated approaches for the conservation of biodiversity in coastal areas.
All our actions are addressing its three following investment priorities: (i) Engage local stakeholders in conservation actions that address threats to key elements of biodiversity in priority Key Biodiversity Areas in the coastal zone. (ii) Engage private sector stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices that deliver positive impacts for conservation in priority Key Biodiversity Areas in the coastal zone. (iii) Support civil society to engage with local or national governments to mainstream biodiversity conservation into integrated coastal zone management, land use and development planning process.
The project is focused on two Key Biodiversity Areas identified along the Albanian Coastline such as the area of Vjosë-Nartë (ALB24) and the area of Saranda bay – Butrint National Park (ALB 04). Phase I was implemented from 2013 to 2017.
